BAC Workshops are held during the Basel-Stadt school holidays, bringing world-class teachers and artists from around the globe to share their knowledge and inspiration with our community.

GUEST TEACHERS
MALEEK WASHINGTON is a performer, choreographer, and teaching artist. A native New Yorker from the Bronx, he began his dance training at Harlem School of the Arts, Broadway Dance Center, and the Laguardia High School for the Performing Arts, and attended The Boston Conservatory on full scholarship. He began his professional career with CityDance Ensemble in Washington DC, before returning to NYC to collaborate with McArthur Genius Awardee Kyle Abraham as a part of Abraham.In.Motion (@aimbykyleabraham) for 4 seasons. He then became the first African-American male to perform in the critically acclaimed immersive show Sleep No More (Punch Drunk).
Maleek choreographed for rap legend Nasโ 2022 โBig Nas Masterclassโ commercial and video, assisted choreography for Spike Leeโs Mont Blanc commercial, and has performed for Sia, Phish, Rihanna, and NBCโs Jesus Christ Superstar LIVE. He has been a member of Camille A. Brown and Dancers for 8 seasons and was an assistant choreographer for Porgy & Bess (Grammy Winner) and Fire Shut Up In My Bones at the Metropolitan Opera in NYC.
His performance talents have been recognized nationally at prestigious venues including The White House, The John F. Kennedy Center for Performing Arts, Jacobโs Pillow, The Joyce Theater, and the Apollo Theater. He has been commissioned to present works by renowned organizations both nationally and internationally, and is a highly sought after teaching artist. Maleek is honored to be a 2022 Princess Grace Award Winner in Choreography, a 2021 Bessie Nominee as an Emerging Choreographer, and is a Co-curator of the 2019 Bronx APAP Dance Festival at Hostos. Currently you can find Maleek performing in the financial district of New York in the new immersive show โLife & Trustโ.
EKATERINA SHUSHAKOVA was born in Moscow, where she began her dance training at the school of Nikolai Ogryzkov. At the age of seventeen, she moved to the Netherlands to study at the Codarts Rotterdam Dance Academy, where she received the Excellence Scholarship.
Ekaterina has been working as a dancer and performer for thirteen years, both as a freelancer and as a member of several renowned European companies, including Skรฅnes Dansteater, GรถteborgsOperans Danskompani, and Tanztheater Wuppertal Pina Bausch.
She has collaborated with choreographers such as Sidi Larbi Cherkaoui, Felix Landerer, Marina Mascarell, Saburo Teshigawara, Pedro Goucha Gomes, Michael Keegan-Dolan, Anton Lachky, Sharon Eyal, Heidi Vierthaler, Stijn Celis, Dimitris Papaioannou, Hiroaki Umeda, Anouk van Dijk, and Stephen Shropshire.
Since August 2023, Ekaterina has been working as a dancer with Ballett Basel.
Maria Bugova
Maria Bugova is a Slovak pianist and educator born in 1953, whose lifelong devotion to music stems from growing up in a musical family. She has taught and performed extensively, bringing rich musical sensitivity and nuance to ballet classes and concert settings alike. Her accompaniment helps elevate movement and emotional depth, making each class a more immersive artistic experience.
Tomo Iino
Tomo Iino is a versatile pianist and percussionist active in contemporary music and performance. He studied at the Musashino University in Japan and now collaborates internationally, performing with ensembles across Europe, including Chamber Academy Basel. His repertoire spans solo works, theater music, and premieres with leading composers, bringing a deep sensitivity to rhythm, texture, and musical expression.
